todays_india_poster.gifThe world’s largest book fair – 58th Frankfurt Book Fair opened today with India as the Guest of Honor.

More than 70 authors from India arrived in Frankfurt for a broad cultural showcase that also features concerts, dance recitals, films and live yoga demonstrations.

Even the left-leaning national daily Tageszeitung got into the mood, printing its masthead Wednesday in Hindi

 Several authors whose works are considered milestones of modern Indian literature will be featured including Shashi Tharoor, Kiran Desai, Amit Chaudhuri, Amitav Ghosh, Mahasweta Devi, Kumar Shukla, Javed Akhtar, Paul Zacharia and Dilip Chitre

Indian Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, who opened the fair’s Indian pavilion Wednesday, said he believed in the power of literature as a force for tolerance and reconciliation.

“In a world threatened with terror, misunderstanding and mistrust, books can and should do much to bring us nearer to each other by creating a neighborhood of peace, understanding and mutual trust,”
