Today is Teacher’s day. Quite an irony for a nation with the legacy of the Guru-Shishya Parampara, to actually need a day to have a cursory glance at them; once treated with utmost respect and at times with reverence.

However, in the past few months, many disturbing events have been brought to light. In one such incident, Prof. H.Sabharwal of Ujjain was beaten to death by ABVP activists for asking for the cancellation of the student union elections as he felt they were becoming highly politicized and was interfering with his students’ studies.

Sheer disrespect or plain hooliganism? If this is the treatment meted out to teachers, then we have a lot of soul searching to do. Not only such incidents shake up the very foundation of democracy, but it is also undermining the respect and gratitude that many of us still show towards teachers.

As for me, I would like to take this opportunity and platform to thank all my teachers for their guidance, their encouragement, their patience and their endurance. To all you wonderful teachers out there, a very Happy Teachers Day.
