The Big B and Tamil star Prabhu opened the 7th IIFA Weekend Film Festival at the Grand Cineplex in Dubai this morning, in a display of solidarity among the diverse Indian film industries.
“Contrary to popular opinion, the Hindi film industry is not the largest in the world – the Telugu film industry is,” (heard this before? ;->) Bachchan said at the Festival opening. “Commercially and financially, the Tamil and Telugu film industries are far ahead of Hindi cinema, and I am delighted that IIFA is showcasing South Indian films and those from other Indian regions to show the true diversity of Indian cinema.”
Prabhu, who has performed in more than 100 movies so far, also thanked IIFA for extending a warm invitation to tamil films . The actor-producer, who is appearing at the Festival alongside his hit Tamil film ‘Chandramukhi,’ promised there would be more South Indian films in the next edition of IIFA.
“We are delighted to be sitting here next to Amitabh Bachchan, and we are thankful for this opportunity to showcase Indian cinema together,” he said.
The IIFA Weekend in Dubai is for the first time showcasing cinema from the regional Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries within India in addition to the more internationally known popular Hindi films.
