The Supreme court has stayed the implementation of the OBC reservation in its current form.
The Court ruled that the 1931 census could not be a determinative factor for identifying the OBCs for the purpose of providing reservation.
I personally see this as being a good thing in the light of the recent developments. This means that govt will have to first do a study to identify the OBCs and then come up with a proposal. Such a thing is absolutely necessary for a program of this magnitude. As in the past the legislature could have legislated against such a decision and put it in the ninth schedule. But the supreme court recently ruled that anything placed in the ninth schedule is also subject to review.
Difference between reservations for SC/ST and OBCs.
This verdict does not mean that reservations of any kind should be stopped. However there is a huge difference between the reservations for SC/ST and the OBCs. The SC/STs are provided reservation because they have suffered for being SC/ST. Hence they are provided reservations based on the single criteria that they are SC/ST. No other criteria is needed because that one criteria is sufficient. Having said that I believe that even that program can be improved. This program, for all its shortcomings, has worked for SC/STs. It has had its success.
For the OBCs, the reservations are based on the fact that they are socially and educationally backward. If someone needs to get benefited by this program, he needs to be identified and proven that he is backward. For that one needs to collect data. As realitycheck has always pointed out that one needs to identify the beneficiaries in order for a program of this scale to succeed. The Supreme court has basically said the same thing about the data that was collected in 1931. The supreme court has not said NO to reservations. It has asked the govt to prove that the people who will benefit from this are really OBCs. Once the govt. gets into the exercise of identifying the OBCs there will be lot of political repercussions to these. That should be interesting to watch in the coming days.
Verdict like these and proper dealing of the issue of creamy layer would go a long way to ensure that the beneficiaries of this program are the ones that really need it.

guy i m a general category person tring for same but do u know i never had snatched book from the hands of sc guy or gal this reseervation cota is there just for getting vote no one need that if my grand parents had a good job bcoz of it then that doesn’t mean that i have no right to get the jopb that i deserve . the people’s who really need a quata are really responsible to get there religion to get there carte under untouchebles ha ha ha !

There is not a single political party who has shown the balls to support the SC verdict. The “OBC” is purely for political gain. In the next election, I will not vote for any party that supports OBC reservation.

“Tamil” Nadu appears to prefer Hindi speaking BC and OBCs in higher education.
In fact many of so-called “Tamil” leaders like Kan(n)imozhi and Karunanidhi speak Telugu but pretend to be Tamils.
Karunanidhi is in-fact very anti-Tamil, which is why reason behind planning to destroy Tamil heritage sites like Raamar Paalam.
Karunanidhi is in fact quite in love with Hindi-speakers which is why none of security staff in Tamil Nadu airports speak Tamil language. In fact it is supposed to be in an insult to speak in Tamil language in Tamil Nadu airport that even Tamil annoucements have been removed starting from Chennai domestic airports.
Karnunanidhi loves Hindi and hates Tamil so much that recently Tamil Nadu FMs owned by Hindian play junk Hindi numbers which is allowed from Karunanidhi’s rule.
Karunanidhi also loves Hindi poems and sings Hindi poems from time to time to get fame with his Hindi masters in Delhi.
Also Thanks to Karnanidhi, Tamil is also banned from official commmunication in central institutions like Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Chennai Petroleum. Only Hindi is allowed.
Thanks to Karnanidhi, Hindi imposition is a must in CBSE schools in Tamil Nadu.
Karunanidhi’s honourable daughter Kan(n)mozhi critized the great poet Subramania Baarathiyaar.
They have successful changed the lines and omitted lines where Baarathiyaar compares Tamil with Thelungu and Kannadam.
Oh yes, now Kan(n)mozhi is also in supportof Telugu actress Shreya. It should be noted that the Telugu actress came inappropriately dressed at function in from of Kalaignar.
After all what can any one expect when a Telugu family rules Tamil Nadu??? You will see more and more Hindi and Telugu caste in Tamil Nadu’s BC and OBC list.

It is foolish to have an OBC reservation . Only in Country like India where political frauds want to fool ordinary poeople such steps are possible. Entrance exams are based odn whayt u study previously and not based on who’s son you are or how much wealth you have. look at that son and daughter of political people they are studying abroad in harvard mit due to cash.there is no forward or backward in this internet age where any one chas right to have information

That wont be the case in our country India. India is still a developing nation. Whereas US and UK are developed nation. What the FC’s have been enjoying for the past 2000-3000 years have been stopped (by a fraction). This is a great verdict by the supreme court. Each nation’s constitution differ. In our constitution it has stated that there should be some reservation for the under developed community, and that is what the supreme court’s verdict proved. Being a BC in creamy layer, even I have lost some scope. After reservation is made, we need to put in some more effort to get into the IIT or IIM.

The OBC reservation proposal never made sense. Higher education admissions should be fair. Everyone should compete for seats and the smartest should get them. Only that’s fair. I’m against OBC reservations, SC/ST reservations, NRI reservations . Even though I’m an NRI i never applied for IIT admission under the NRI quota, coz I thought it’s not fair – I tried through the general quota.
People should STOP demanding reservations and politicians stop proposing them to increase the vote bank ; instead encourage people to work their capacity off and carve out their future in a higher education institution.
I would recommend special scholarships be given to those OBC/ST/SCs who make through the admissions process or even let them write the entrance exams for free, but NO reservations – EVERYBODY HAS TO EARN A SEAT!

I dont think money is the greatest motivator. There wont be any use if we let them write the test for free. Ms.Geetha, I strongly your point. If we implement this, then our government should close all the accounts and spend for the BCs, and OBCs.

WHEN IT COMES TO RESERVATIONS PMK, DMK AND AIADMK PREFER HINDI OVER TAMIL
Pro reservationationists ironically favour Muslims who only speak Hindi at home or Nayudus and Reddys who speak only Telugu at home. At the same time they treat Tamil-speaking Brahmins and Chettiars as foreign invaders by excluding them . They also claim to fight for the Tamil cause….by dividing Tamil society!!? PMK, DMK, ADMK etc reject creamy layer, support the cruel 2-tumbler system of Southern Tamil Nadu and now demand extended reservation. PMK leader will go Delhi, Hyderabad and Bombay to promote reservation rather than setting up Tamil learning centers in those places. This shows that Tamil Nadu policitians don’t mind loosing their self respect and prefer to worship their Hindi masters than to work for an integrated Tamil society. Incidently the PMK health minister has made Hindi compulsory for medicine, the the DMK surface transport minister has made Hindi compulsory on national roads even in Tamil Nadu.
