Did you know that at least 40,000 to 50,000 worms are killed in the process of making a beautiful silk Saree? Have you ever felt guilty of what you wear because of this? Well, you don’t have to anymore. Here comes Ahimsa Silk – Silk that is woven from a cocoon after the butterfly/moth has flown away from the cocoon so that the worms escape the dip in the fatal boiling hot pail of water.
Ahimsa Silks is a commendable effort from Mr. Kusuma Rajaiah, who is Technical Officer in the Andhra Pradesh Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society (APCO). Guess who inspired him? Janaki Venkataraman, wife of the former President of India, R. Venkataraman, and cine actress Amala.
It all began when Janaki Venkataraman, wife of the former President of India, R. Venkataraman, visited Hyderabad.
She enquired of an officer of the APCO whether they had silk saris which did not involve the killing of worms. “When actor Amala who is deeply involved with the activities of the Blue Cross also wanted to make a similar purchase, it accelerated my interest and I began doing research,” says Rajaiah. “By 1992, I managed to produce two sample saris.” [Fabric of compassion - The Hindu]
