Two sources, one inside the Government of India and the other kind of inside/outside have confirmed to the Mutiny, that ISPs are being instructed to ‘control’ access to blogspot. It seems that some blogs are being used by some terror units (read SIMI) to communicate.
There is a crack down in place. IP numbers are being physically located and identified. All should come back to normal once this operation is over. There is no ban in place. Livejournal and WordPress have been spared. No reason given.
Now I know you are not going to believe this, so I’m going to quote what she said, “This operation is limited to certain parts of India. Bloggers in Andaman, Nicobar and Lakhsadeep islands are not affected.” I thought she was joking but I didn’t hear the reciprocal laughter from the other end of the phone line.
I’m sorry; I can’t give you any more details or updates unless we hear from our sources. They have indicated they won’t on this topic but we are trying.

“It seems that some blogs are being used by some terror units (read SIMI) to communicate”
and in other news, The Indian Government has decided to turn off the water supply as it has been reported that the terrorists use water to live
Its always good to see that any government has intelligent people making all the decisions.

Amen, Daniel.

Intelligent? You cut off water supply because you’re incapable of finding terrorists? That’s stupid. About blogs, we have the right to express our view and have every right to use blogger.

I think comparing a ‘control’ on blog access to shutting off water supply is a bit extreme. The Government has a duty to protect us. This is NOT a ban, there is an investigation taking place. If going without blogspot and typepad for 48 hours can save lives, then I’m all for it.
There is no freedom is speech issue here. This is just a temp security measure. Let’s show some maturity.

I’d like to get a look at the offending blogs, to know if they were advocating violence in India. Does anyone know the URL for the SIMI blog, or any of the other banned ones?
July 18, 2006 at 2:16 am
maybe they weren’t advocating violence, maybe they were just using it to communicato to each other. maybe openly. Maybe in code. Its very simple to communicate via blogs. And very difficult to trace too.
Eg. An email sent from A to B can be traced from A’s IP > ISP > A’s Email company > B’s Email co > ISP > B’s IP.
But for a blog, who know? thousands of people might be visiting or maybe only 1. and there are innumerable listed/unlisted blogs too. If sources have pointed out a few then i guess actions is being taken.
Hope it leads somewhere tho…

Too bad most feds don’t know that.

July 18, 2006 at 10:17 am
I wonder how terrorists would use Blogger to inflict damage unto the Indians. Also, it is stupid to put a ban on Blogger. There are simply so many other venues through which they can express themselves. This move is, in many ways, like their Pakistani counterparts’, who have beeg keeping a ban on entire Blogger since the publication of the Mohamemd cartoons in order to prevent Pakistanis from seeing those images.

Lets not get all agitated about a ban and make a big fuss. Even if the logic can be questioned, if it saves some one from harm its worth it.
If it was a bit silly, well everyone has to learn about technology.
Lets not make a big issue about this, rather lets pray for the ones effected.

July 19, 2006 at 12:48 am
It has happened before in 2003 too. Back then it was to apparantly check seperatist groups from North East India from spreading propaganda. Just like then now too entire domains have been blocked. Our ISP’s don’t seem to be able to block out specific blogs somehow. The silver lining amidst this farce is that last time around things did get sorted out. I was blogging back then at a different site and can verify that fact.
July 19, 2006 at 12:48 am

One word:
BLUNDER
Questions that cannot be answered:
1.Did the government order the banning of all the blogs within these domains, or was it a blunder in the implementation?
2.Why the hell did they not contact google, yahoo, typepad and others who could have blocked those specific problem blogs. Why did they block the entire domains?
3.What is the purpose, other than the inconvenience caused everyone knows at least a half dozen ways to circumvent the ban.
4.If this is how the government plans to control terrorism…I can imagine how powerless/confused they are.The stupidity of our government is exposed in this misadventure. How will the government handle the embarrassment? How will the country?

July 19, 2006 at 8:52 pm
The whole idea of blogging is to express views without ANY kind of restraint. Also i fail to understand the purpose of a blanket ban on blogspot since there are millions of ppl who use it just to express their views and not to exhort anyone to terror. Further blogs have proved themselves useful during the day of the attack in Mumbai helping the location of missing persons
July 20, 2006 at 12:02 am
This is a very stupid thing to do.. kills the spirit of bloggin.
How can they forget that blogs came to the rescue when the phone lines were jammed??!!?
WE, bloggers are very much a part of India and would never do anything to harm the integrity or dignity of our country. Freedom of speech cannot be denied, nor the right to information , as to why were these blogs/blog sites banned.
There are various sites like orkut which have disgraceful communities, What will the govt. do about them??
July 20, 2006 at 10:46 am
i have around 6 websites, blocking or stopping people from doing somethiong is not fair , its better that security agencies filter out content and then block specific web pages…..today is websites , tommorow would be @mail ………then SMS…….then THE GREAT INDIAN POSTAL SERVICE……..!!!!
July 20, 2006 at 2:57 pm

July 20, 2006 at 5:01 pm
Net policing is required..
I very much support India’s ban on specific websites inciting hate, violence..
These websites influence young minds which are nruturing into Terrorists or mobsters.
I have known of some websites that the govt has ban.
Some Hindu websites, incite extreme hate and violence.. also using obscene languages..
one such post read “Hijda manmohan singh”..
Websites like jihadunspun.net, Kavkaz, Hizbuttarrir, Jamat-ut-dawa.. our also websites which have shown international viewership. It promotes and supports terrorism. Extreme articles on Islam callin on Muslims for Jihad. Such content is inflaming and inciting muslim minds.
India should start net policing force.. and selectively block and target such websites..
Any websites with profanity against any religion, race, community.. inciting hatred and violence must be blocked and attacked.
Freedom of Speech does not include freedom to incite hatred and violence.. These websites are influencing minds of would-be-terrorists..
It all leads to Bombings and Riots..
